When designing/installing a patio or walkway, there are three crucial factors to consider to determine the overall cost: The first is size: Take the width x length of your space to determine the square footage for the project. The second choice is dry laid stone or stone mortared onto a concrete pad. Dry laid stone sits on a bed of compacted gravel and stone dust with sand or stone dust between the seams of each stone. This is a more informal approach perfect for backyards, side lanes etc. Wet laid flagstone is mortared to a concrete pad, with mortar set in between each stone. This is a more formal approach for front entries, poolscapes, or commercial sites. The third major factor is choice of material. Random flagstone costs less since each piece is delivered to the site as a unique puzzle piece. My job is to fit random flagstone together to be a tight, neat composition. Square cut flagstone costs considerably more, but looks very formal.
